Cow House Studios is an art studio located in County Wexford, Ireland. The organization runs an art program for teens in the summer, and a residency for artists in the Fall. Art on the Farm is designed for teens interested in exploring the visual arts and honing their creative skills. The staff is dedicated to providing a safe, fun and encouraging environment focused on fostering the artistic growth of high school students. Whether their interest is drawing, painting, or photography, the multidisciplinary approach

helps to broaden their perspective by providing individual student critiques and exposing students to a variety of approaches.

The backdrop to this experience is a 200-year old family farm nestled at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains in county Wexford. A productive farm to this day, the 180 acres of land insures an authentic experience in rural living, inspiring the work made at the studios. Students will also have a chance to experience other parts of the country through two organized trips; the first to the capital, Dublin and the second, to the west of Ireland.

Internship Description for 2012

Interns will support the Arts on the Farm program. They will have the opportunity to teach classes, mentor young artists, travel Ireland and see first-hand the workings of a self sustaining artist run studio and residency program. Interns live on-site. The cost of housing, meals, and work-related domestic travel ($1,000 for the duration of the internship) will be deducted from the intern’s payment.

Desired Qualifications

The applicant should have a studio arts background. While an art major is not necessary, the intern should have her own artistic practice, since she will be making her own work in addition to teaching. The program teaches drawing, painting and photography, so experience in one of these mediums is a plus. An interest in teaching is essential, and an open, easygoing personality, and the ability to get along with others, is also important.

Finalists for this internship will be asked to bring a portfolio of 5-10 works to the interview.

Language Requirement: No language requirement

Operation ASHA is a registered nonprofit based in Delhi, India, Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Chicago, IL. Its mission is to eradicate tuberculosis by bringing high quality treatment to the doorsteps of slum dwellers in India and Cambodia. Cambodia is one of 22 high-burden TB countries in the world and the disease is estimated to kill 13,000 Cambodians annually. This death rate is due to Cambodia’s unusually high HIV/TB co-infection. Further, an estimated 40% of TB patients are not being identified or brought in for treatment. Cambodia’s rural villages provided a new test for Operation ASHA’s model. Because of the low population density, community DOTS centers were not the most effective method of bringing TB treatment to Cambodia. In response, OpASHA started training mobile counselors, who could quickly travel from village to village on motorcycles.

Since January 2011, Operation ASHA has hired 11 mobile counselors to provide DOTS treatment and sputum collection. Currently we cover a population of .5 million in the Western Operational District of Phnom Penh. By 2012, we expect to reach 40 centers and approx. 1,000 patients.

Internship Description for 2012

• Complete office administrative tasks, including drafting and editing documents and grant proposals

• Quantify quality control measures and develop useful reports of patient data (ie. Cost per patient, or the relationship between distance to nearest treatment center and the total number of patients)
• Research potential areas of expansion of health services, including having a diagnostic lab and treating MDR-TB

Medicine/Global Developmental Care
• Work alongside counselors and physicians in slum health centers

Oakland is a mid-size California city located on San Francisco Bay. With a population of about 400,000, Oakland is one of the most demographically diverse cities in the nation.

The Council is comprised of seven members each of whom represents a separate geographic district, and one at-large member. Councilmember Patricia Kernighan represents District 2, which is the most demographically diverse of all the districts. Among its various neighborhoods is Chinatown, a large Vietnamese community and other Asian communities.

Servicing constituents requesting information or assistance in navigating the bureaucracy is a substantial part of the work load of a Council office. Researching subject matter for possible legislation that the Councilmember may introduce is another major activity. Attending community meetings to address community issues involves significant time. The workload of an intern will vary depending on immediate demands on the Councilmember and her agenda.

The selected candidate will be both supervised and mentored by District 2 Chief of Staff Jennie Gerard ’66. Ms. Gerard has been working with Wellesley students interning in the Bay Area for the past 10 years.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates with an interest in elected office and in urban issues are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be flexible and willing to shift gears as necessary, and also be well organized and practical. Strong analytical, writing and computer skills are necessary. Ease in interacting with a wide range of constituents is essential.

No language requirement other than English.
